BARL gp1 driver Natasha Farnum debut as Brands Hatch, UK | Friday, October 21 2011
The Formula Vee Festival at Brands Hatch will experience a Caribbean flavour this weekend as Barbados racer Natasha Farnum swaps the warmer climes to make her UK circuit racing debut.
Farnum, who normally races in the Barbados Auto Racing League, has made the 4,000 mile trip to Brands Hatch, funded by her sponsors, to race in the Cannons Tin Tops series, which will support the Formula Vee Festival.
With only one circuit in Barbados, which is vastly different to racing in the United Kingdom, the Barbados driver cannot wait to tackle the famous 1.2 mile in a Vauxhall Astra, after receiving an invite to race from Cannons Tin Tops series organiser Rod Birley.
She said: "I'm just looking forward to the experience. If I do well, obviously that will be fantastic but to be able to race in another country is an amazing opportunity. Something I could not have given up.
"I race a rear-wheel drive Toyota Starlet and the track back home is very different. It's a lot smaller, a lot tighter and not nice and smooth like out there Brands Hatch. Obviously, I haven't driven the track at Brands Hatch, never been here before but just from looking at it, it looks like it's going to be heaven to drive. My fingers are itching just thinking about it."
In sporting terms the Caribbean is most famous for its love of cricket, but it appears motor racing is just as strong and a crowd favourite in Barbados, according to Farnum.
She said: "Motor sport is massive. It's one of the biggest, if not the biggest sports in Barbados. For an average race meeting, we probably get somewhere between 5,000-7,000 people. But for a big race meeting, we probably get anything around 12,000-20,000 people, so it's massive."
Farnum will make her Brands Hatch racing debut in Canon Tin Tops this Saturday in qualifying at 11.16am.
